In the sixth book of the Aeneid, Virgil presents the Cumaean Sibyl in the dual role of prophetess and priestess of Apollo and guide of Aeneas on his journey into the underworld. Inside her cave, the Cumaean Sibyl prophesies the dangers that Aeneas will have to face when he arrives in Lazio. The priestess, inspired by the divinity, transcribed her prophecies in verse on palm leaves, stirred by the gusts of wind that blew through the "hundred openings" of the cave.

Archaeological studies today describe the so-called Sibyl's Cave in a very different way. According to scholars, it was actually a Greek military structure built to defend the port of Cumae, in ancient times located below the cliff. It is surmised that the large openings on the side housed powerful war machines, capable of striking the ships of attackers even from a great distance, making the structure a real bunker ante litteram.

According to the legend, the Cumaean Sibyl was the Italic priestess presiding over the Apollonian oracle at the Greek colony of Cumae. Ancient sources located oracular activity near Lake Averno, in a cave called "Sibyl's Cave".

The current coastline is much more seaward now than the ancient location of the port of Cumae. According to legend, it is here that Aeneas landed to consult the Sibyl. Some years ago, the entire area was declared a strict nature reserve.
