It is dedicated to the King of Italy Umberto I and was built to commemorate his visit to Naples during the cholera epidemic of 1884, as a result of which the city undewent extensive urban renovation: the so-called "Risanamento". The columns on the sides of the entrance arch bear the allegories of the seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn. On the gable, on the other hand, the allegories of Commerce and Industry are represented reclining, positioned on each side of Wealth: myths of a bourgeois society that was flourishing in the 19th century.
The façade of the main entrance, which opens onto Via San Carlo, has a portico supported by travertine columns and two arches, one accessing the gallery, the other opening onto the Ambulacrum.
The smaller façades have a similar structure, with decorations only in stucco. On the sides of the arch that opens onto Via Santa Brigida two stucco shields are supported by putti. In the one on the left there is the emblem of the seat of Porto; in the one on the right the emblem of the seat of Montagna. Higher up there are two panels alluding to War and Peace.
There are two avenues in the Galleria that intersect orthogonally. Covered by an iron and glass structure, they are demarcated by elegant buildings, four of which are accessed from the central octagon while there are shops and bars on the ground floor of this elegant architecture.
The glass and iron vault, designed by Paolo Boubée, is in perfect harmony with the supporting brick-work structure. In the eight spandrels of the dome, eight female figures in copper support eight chandeliers.
In the shields on the Via Verdi façade there are the emblems of the seat of Nido on the left and the seat of Popolo on the right . Higher up there are two panels alluding to abundance and wealth, with references to the cultivation of the land and navigation.
The floor mosaics under the dome depict the winds and the signs of the zodiac. They were produced by the Padoan company in Venice in 1952, replacing the originals damaged by foot traffic and war.
Galleria Umberto I also appears in a scene in the TV series "L'amica geniale". The brawl involving the boys of the district, who went to the center of Naples to eat an ice cream, is set in the Galleria. A word out of place and...
Diverse proposals were submitted in the tender for the construction of the Galleria but the winning project was that of the engineer Emmanuele Rocco, to whom the main entrance to the Gallery, overlooking the Teatro di San Carlo, is dedicated.
The Star of David can be seen on the drums of the cupola, consisting of semicircular windows, . This iconography expresses the function of Galleria Umberto I, the historical seat of Neapolitan Freemasonry.
