In fact, the hilly areas above Sorrento are used to grow olive trees, planted on steeply sloping or terraced land and bordered by dry limestone walls, creating an ecosystem that integrates perfectly with the Mediterranean scrub. This hardy and long-living tree was sacred to the Greeks and cherished by the Latins and has been the main source of livelihood of Sorrento farmers for millennia.
Climbing up towards the centre of Sant'Agata sui due Golfi, the track runs alongside small private vegetable gardens. Besides the famous lemons, oranges, Sorrento walnuts and the exquisite olive oil, this area, especially in the innermost hilly areas, still produces unique niche products. One of the stars of these is the Sant'Agata sui due Golfi limoncella apple. In this strip of land, suspended between the Bays of Naples and Salerno, 400 metres above sea level, this typical straw yellow fruit is still grown and until the middle of the last century it was the main economic resource for the inhabitants.
The narrow alleys in Sant'Agata are wedged between high tuff walls that offer shade even in the summer months. At some points, flying buttresses connect and support the two facing walls.
Private gardens, grown on stone terraces, with a splendid view of Sorrento, overlook the track. Many homes in Sant'Agata have long been used mainly by tourists, since, already back in the 19th century, the town was one of the most prestigious international destinations of the Grand Tour.
This house in Sant'Agata was the beloved summer home of Salvatore Di Giacomo, Italian poet, playwright and essayist. Here he composed poems in the Neapolitan dialect (some of which were later set to music) that are now an important part of Neapolitan popular culture.
We can imagine an inspired Nietzsche walking along these paths and then, in the land of the sirens, writing "Human, all too human", the first work in which the philosopher uses the aphoristic form, published in 1876. Writing to his sister Elisabeth and his mother Franziska he says: "“Sorrento and Naples are beautiful - people have not been exaggerating. The air here is a mixture of mountain and sea air."
The place name "Sorrento", well documented in classical times also in Greek sources, derives from the Latin "Surrentum". Its origin can be traced back to the Greek form Συρρεντόν, Syrrentón, from the verb συρρέο, syrréo, "I converge", referring to the waters that flow down from the narrow nearby valleys. The name therefore means "confluence of water".
Starting from Sorrento, the mule track climbs up to Sant'Agata dei due Golfi, entering an almost wild area where small woods alternate with cultivated land. From some points it is possible to see Sorrento from a truly unique angle. If you want to treat yourself to the emotions of a walk along this enchanting track, but want to save energy, take a Circumvesuviana line bus to reach via Sant'Antonio, where the track begins.
The Sant'Antonio mule track offers trekking enthusiasts unforgettable emotions and magnificent views. The track that connects Tasso's town with Sant’Agata sui due Golfi is certainly one of the most enchanting of the mule tracks that can still be found around Sorrento today. An ideal route both for trekking enthusiasts and lovers of wonderful views.
