After years spent in vain hoping she would return his love, he decided to put an end to his suffering by throwing himself into the sea. Fate transformed him into the splendid headland bathed by the waters of the Bay of Naples. Instead, Nisida was transformed into the small islet facing the headland of Posillipo, today a place of suffering for young convicts.
Virgiliano park is characterised by a system of terraces overlooking the Bay of Naples, with a sweeping view of the bay and the sheer, yellow walls of tuff rock on the headland of Posillipo.
At the playground there is a bust of Mahatma Ghandi, the famous Indian politician and philosopher whose doctrine of non-violence contributed to the independence of his country.
In the park there is a bust of Simon Bolivar, Venezuelan patriot and revolutionary, who fought in the wars of independence of several South American countries.
Echoing the legend, Nisida was chosen as the location for a prison and now, on the islet, there is a Juvenile Detention Centre where around 60 boys and 10 girls between the ages of 14 and 21 on whom criminal and administrative sanctions have been inflicted live.
In the 1960s, the "Virgiliano" Sports Centre was built in the park including a football field and an athletics track with a 1000-seat grandstand and management was entrusted to the relevant professional associations.
The park was built on the headland of Posillipo at the end of the 1920s and was opened in 1931 with the name Victory or Beauty Park. It was later renamed Memorial Park until, on the initiative of Guido Della Valle, it took the name Virgiliano in honour of the Roman poet Virgil.
You can see the islands of Procida, Ischia and Capri, the islet of Nisida, the Bay of Pozzuoli, the districts of Agnano, Fuorigrotta, Rione Traiano, Pianura, the Monastery of Camaldoli, the Bay of Bacoli and the headland of Capo Miseno, Monte di Procida, Vesuvius, the Vesuvius coast, the Sorrento Peninsula, the Bay of Trentaremi with its archaeological remains and the old town of Naples from here.
