htmlText_62D5BCD5_760F_CEDC_41D1_3AED3262551E.html = Near the tower there is an ancient stairway carved in the rocks that leads to the cave of the Sirens, a cavity in the high cliff inside which the sparkle produced by the reflection of the waves helps create an atmosphere abounding in legendary spirit.
Along the descent to the sea, a rock epigraph in the Oscan language dating back to the second century BC is carved on the rock wall. The inscription, discovered in 1985, mentions the names of the three Meddices Minervii (Magistrates of Minerva), who commissioned the construction work of the Landing place, along with the stairway leading to the sanctuary.
The temple of Athena, the Roman Minerva, once stood here. Like the temple of Cape Sounion in Greece, this sacred building marked the territory, serving as a reference point for sailors. The presence of the temple is widely attested by many literary sources. A chronicle from 172 BC reports, for example, that important sacrifices were made at the temple of Minerva, whose notoriety reached as far as Rome. The ruins of the temple, however, have still not been accurately identified.
On the right, we can see the island of Capri set like a gem in the cobalt blue sea, with the distinctive sea stacks. The blue island, as the locals call it, appears suspended between sea and sky.
Along the trail you will come across the Fossa Papa Tower, which, from the height of its elegant regality, appears to pay homage to your passage, before tackling the final stretch, overlooking the spectacular Mitigliano cove.
The Athenian headland was named by the Greeks, who built a temple there dedicated to Athena ; over the centuries, for spiritual or military reasons, it has been the site of temples and trading stations, defensive works and aristocratic villas.
The downhill path takes visitors into the wild and extremely intriguing scenery of a mountain scorched by the sun and the sea. The nature reserve protects approximately 40 kilometres of coastline and sea, where not infrequently you can sight majestic sperm whales. It seems as if the course of time has stopped in this magical place.
The Minerva tower was built in 1334 at the behest of Robert of Anjou, and rebuilt in 1566. The tower served as an observation point from which the alarm could be raised in the event of pirate attacks and was part of a series of watchtowers built along the Sorrento peninsula. In the case of danger, a bell rang out from the tower, circumstance to which, most likely, we owe the origin of the name of Punta Campanella.
Punta Campanella is at the tip of the headland of the Sorrento peninsula, stretching towards Capri within a marine protected area. Rich in history, it is immersed in a nature of rare beauty. Punta Campanella can be reached along the old Via Minervia, still partially paved with Roman basolato.
