It has a semicircular structure with a diameter of about 20 metres and is about three hundred metres from the Blue Grotto. The Orrico Fort is certainly one of the most important sites in the history of Capri.
htmlText_3E56DC57_5C82_D2A2_41CD_2B9ED9636B5C.html = The forts and the path, following the restoration work carried out in 2003, have become the first open air artistic-educational ecomuseum in the world. In the area, only plants able to thrive in the sparse soil that has accumulated between the rocks and in the arid cracks in the rocks take root. Among the many plants present it is possible to identify characteristic species such as wild fennel or sea-lavender.
htmlText_4CA2DD8D_5CAB_A06F_41BE_17E4EE4F8082.html = The forts were built as watchtowers, to ward off the danger of pirate raids. Given its strategic position in the Bay of Naples, Capri was subject for a long time to continuous pirate raids. The phenomenon of piracy and "guerre de corse" has characterised the history of the island since the 9th century, when the Saracens began to loot the coasts of the Mediterranean.
htmlText_530C6851_5CB5_60F4_41CA_EED8B3EA6B31.html = Within the 2 metre thick town walls there were cannons directed south-west and north-west so that their fire crossed the fire of the Campetiello fort which, in turn, crossed that of the Pino fort in order to create an impassable barrier for any ship trying to approach.
htmlText_A3B6FE43_B42D_DFD6_41CA_2453ECE7FA2E.html = The Pino Fort is the closest to the Punta Carena lighthouse. It has a circular structure with an external diameter of 60 metres; instead, the interior is rectangular and is located 40 metres above sea level. From this strategic position, the Cala di Mezzo to the north and the Cala del Limmo to the South were controlled.
htmlText_A51545AE_B3EC_6CAE_41D7_F15BF8BA343D.html = It was at the Orrico fort that on 4 October 1808, Gioacchino Murat attacked the island of Capri with his fleet and 2,000 men led by General Lamarque to wrest it from English rule. After landing at the fort, Lamarque's men climbed onto a cliff that dropped down steeply into the sea, surprising the British. This allowed the French to quickly conquer Anacapri and the town of Capri below, already under siege.
htmlText_A52D29FF_B3DC_24AE_41E6_764A51001953.html = The Mesola Fort stands on the Campetiello headland, which takes its name from the De Campetiello family who originally owned it. The building is circular with thick walls, in which there were two cannons to defend the coast.
htmlText_ACE2A2D3_B434_E4F7_41E0_6C30DA093664.html = During the restoration works, planned and directed by the architect Enrico Lucca, work was also carried out to make all aspects of the territory understandable. To this end, more than two hundred majolica plaques describing the area's history, flora and fauna have been made by the ceramic artist Sergio Rubino, to be positioned along the entire path
htmlText_CE973B3E_C37D_8176_41C6_2C24F5FE70E2.html = The Path of the Forts connects the Blue Grotto and the Punta Carena lighthouse, passing by all four defensive structures along the entire west coast of the island of Capri. Along the path, the vegetation is sparse and discontinuous and mainly consists of dwarf shrubs, able to survive even in such a hostile environment because they are continuously wettened by the splashes of sea water.
