Caffè Gambrinus

In a 'strategic' location, between Piazza Trieste e Trento (San Ferdinando), Via Toledo and Piazza del Plebiscito, since 1890 it has been the city's meeting place for chatting about art, news, films or simply enjoying a coffee. It occupied some rooms on the ground floor of the former guest quarters of the Royal House (1815), now the Prefecture, rented by Mariano Vacca, a theatre and music lover and a leading figure in the city's social life. Thus the Gran Caffè Gambrinus was born: the name of the legendary inventor of beer, the Nordic drink par excellence, combined with Neapolitan coffee. The architect who directed the work (Antonio Curri) created a harmonious fusion between the structures and the works of the many painters and sculptors involved in the decoration, very different in style and temperament (including Vincenzo Caprile, Pietro Scoppetta, Edoardo Matania, Giuseppe Casciaro, Attilio Pratella, Vincenzo Migliaro), which made the café a modern art gallery. The Gambrinus has retained its Art Nouveau furnishings and original architectural decorations, including late 19th-century stucco work and paintings, and continues to be one of Naples' best-loved and most popular venues.
