Church or religious building

Parrocchia Santa Maria Annunziata

In a picturesque location at the foot of the Rione Terra and next to the old dock, almost in the water, the small church is an ancient place of worship, linked to the culture and popular traditions of the fishing village that developed along the seashore. It has a special history: built in 1621, dedicated to the Purification of Mary from the name of the Confraternity that commissioned it, its picturesque location caused frequent damage due to water invasion during sea storms, so much so that it had to be rebuilt in 1876. In the meantime, in 1743, another church with the same name was built further upstream, and in the church on the dock (the "Purification at Sea") celebrations were held only during the summer. The constant disagreements between the Confraternity and the sailors, who called the church on the sea Our Lady of the Assumption, their patroness, only ended in 1876, when the bishop decreed the separation of the two churches On the high altar (1890) is the 19th century painting of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple and two side altars (1895) are dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus (left) and Our Lady of the Assumption (right). On this altar is the statue of the Assumption in wood and fabric (19th century) that is at the centre of the traditional festival, between the sacred and the profane, on 15 August. The celebration, which is still very popular, combines the sacred procession from the church, with the statue of the Assumption carried on the shoulders through the streets of the village, with the 'palio del pennone' (mast of sailing boats), a 'seafaring' and acrobatic version of the cuccagna mast.
