A companion of Saint Gennaro in his martyrdom, and according to some legends his friend and relative, Sossio was born in Miseno and while still young became the passionate deacon described by the sources, a spreader of the Christian faith and preacher against pagan idols. Condemned to death, he shared the fate of Gennaro (patron saint of Naples), Festo, Desiderio, Procolo (patron saint of Pozzuoli), Eutiche and Acuzio in the Forum Vulcani, the Solfatara, where the martyrs were beheaded in 305 AD. According to tradition, in the same year of his martyrdom, on 23 September (the day dedicated to him), the saint was buried at Miseno and venerated as patron saint in a church built on the same site as the one we see today. But around 850, an incursion by Saracen pirates led some of the inhabitants to leave Miseno and to found a new town, Frattamaggiore, in a wooded area far from the sea, where the cult of San Sossio was perpetuated and he was recognised as the patron saint of both towns. The remains of the martyr in 1807 were translated to Frattamaggiore in the basilica consecrated to the Saint. The church of Miseno, rebuilt not far from the sea, was commissioned in 1661 and renovated in the early 19th century. The façade is decorated with a majolica clock and the interior has a single nave, with a coloured majolica floor and vaults decorated with stucco festoons. Its location is particularly striking: a little higher than the road, the staircase leading to the entrance is a small open-air museum of Roman marbles. Parts of columns, sculpted capitals and remains of marble are located in the churchyard, while fragments of worked marble and Roman epigraphs (1st-2nd century AD) have been found in the church.
