Cicala Hill

The hill of Cicala is the green lung of the city of Nola and its first inhabitants are the same nolani that between the fifth and thirteenth century (centuries of looting and barbarian invasions, frequent floods, earthquakes and eruptions of Vesuvius) moved on the hill, giving rise to a new village, Castelcicala fortified with walls and a building that will be the first nucleus of the castle. Of Lombard origin (460 A.D.), the structure was rebuilt in the Norman era and became a strategic point for controlling the territory and a witness to all the historical events that took place over the centuries. The Castle, now owned by the Capuchin Fathers of Nola, is home to the Giordano Bruno Literary Park, which oversaw its restoration. Other monumental buildings stand along the hillside: the convent of Santa Croce dei Cappuccini (1566), built on the remains of an earlier church dedicated to the cross; the Episcopal Seminary of Nola (1749-1753), which houses an important collection of epigraphy from the Nola countryside, including the inscription of the Cippus Abellanus: a treaty in Oscan between Abella (modern Avella, in the province of Avellino) and Nola on the management of a sanctuary built on the border between the two territories; the monastery of Sant'Angelo in Palco (15th century), a complex of extraordinary beauty and great scenic impact, and a 'stage' overlooking an unforgettable panorama. The road that runs along the hill of Cicala crosses the ancient mule track that leads into the green, among olive trees, hazelnut trees and cultivated land, to reach the hill of Visciano.
