Street

Corso Umberto I

From the 'redevelopment' project launched in 1884, the modern street was born after the demolition of alleys and ancient foundations. The Rettifilo, as it is referred to in the urban plan and as it is called by the Neapolitans, is a long ribbon of road that connects the Central Station to Piazza Giovanni Bovio, known as Piazza Borsa and the financial centre of the 19th-century city, passing through Piazza Nicola Amore (where the Duomo station of underground line 1 is being completed). The appearance of the street reflects the taste of the time in the neo-Renaissance style buildings, designed with sober decorations and with shops on the ground floor, and along the pavements, which are always crowded, there is a continuous succession of shops and businesses, particularly clothing stores. On the street is the historic seat of the University of Naples "Federico II", since 1777 in the former Jesuit college, enlarged between 1897 and 1908. The façade is neoclassical, with access steps flanked by two sphinxes and an imposing pediment adorned with statues and bas-reliefs. Piazza Bovio, redeveloped in 2010 for the opening of the Università stop on metro line 1, is dominated by the eclectic-style Palazzo della Borsa (1895), now home to the Chamber of Commerce, and the monumental equestrian statue of Vittorio Emanuele II (1897). The side wing of the palace houses the early Christian church of Sant'Aspreno, the first bishop of Naples.
