Camaldoli Hermitage of Santa Maria degli Angeli

The hill of Visciano, populated by hazelnut trees (the local variety called San Giovanni is very popular) reaches an altitude of about 350 metres. Here, on an extension of 10 hectares of land enclosed by walls, is the hermitage of Santa Maria degli Angeli, built at the beginning of the 1600s as an extension of the old Camaldoli (of which only ruins remain). Suppressed in 1807, it was then returned (1895) to the Camaldolese, who remained in the monastery until 1990, when the last monks left and the hermitage was entrusted to the Missionary Fathers of the Divine Redemption, who since 1993 have been restoring the complex and the church, dedicated to Mary of the Angels and rich in 18th-century works of art.The Missionary Fathers transformed the estate into a flourishing farm, inhabited by many animals - cows, sheep, donkeys, pigs - with beekeeping and strictly organic and natural crops. Olives, walnuts, hazelnuts, cherries, citrus fruits, apricots, plums and vegetables are grown, as well as flowers, aromatic and medicinal herbs and, above all, vines for the production of piedirosso, aglianico and falanghina. Between the green spaces and the convent, the small dwellings that were once the cells of the hermit monks, who chose to live in solitude, now welcome guests. An educational farm, a hostel and the herbalist's shop, where visitors can buy the hermit's products, complete the Camaldolese farm. The belvedere of the hermitage, characterised by the statue of Christ the Redeemer, offers an incredible view over the entire Neapolitan plain.
