Royal Palace Garden

Inspired by the fashion of the time (1842), it follows the sinuous and apparently irregular 'English' style of the romantic garden, with paths oriented towards the scenic views of the gulf, Vesuvius and the hill, offering unprecedented views of Castel Nuovo and San Martino. Designed by the botanist Federico Dehnhardt and surrounded by an iron gate with the entrance on the side facing the New Castle, it can be reached from the courtyard of honour of the Royal Palace, the starting point for the visit. Floral plants and rare trees characterise the park, evidence of the special attention given to the choice of plants, combining exotic and traditional species in the search for unusual colour effects. From the pergola of bougainvillea glabra to holm oaks, pines, laurels, pittosporum, privets, camellias, hollies, laurels, cedars, cypresses and banana trees: a botanical 'collection' that is magnificent in terms of variety and number of specimens, including the extraordinary ficus magnolioides, planted in 1842, with its powerful roots emerging from the ground; the outer part of the garden is laid out as a lawn. The terrace of the Spianata, overlooking Castel Nuovo, is a clear and bright view of the port with Vesuvius in the background. Beyond the courtyard of honour, the roof of the underground rehearsal room (2010) of the Teatro San Carlo is visible with the sculpture Rehearsal by Mimmo Paladino. The small and cosy Italia garden in Piazza Trieste e Trento reflects the 19th-century post-Unification taste with the Italia statue by Francesco Liberti (1861) in the centre of two large camellia beds.
