Hanging Gardens of the Charterhouse San Martino

Few traces remain of the olive and vineyard landscape of the Vomerese hill: a rustic estate on the edge of the Petraio slope with orchards, vineyards and vegetable garden areas until the 19th century owned by the Carthusian monastery of San Martino and the green areas of the Carthusian complex (1368).The Carthusian monks' cultivated land descends from the highest point of the hill to the city in a succession of cultivated terraces with an articulated system of terraces and vegetable gardens that gives shape to the hanging gardens of the Charterhouse, covering an area of 7 hectares. Privileged access is in the private flats of the prior, spiritual and cultural leader of the community, with the two-flight 'a calico' staircase, a small Baroque masterpiece of sinuous curves (Cosimo Fanzago), leading down to the prior's roof garden. It is a hortus conclusus dedicated to medicinal plants, which supplied the Carthusian pharmacy, and to meditation; the next garden is the 'prior's vegetable garden', overlooked by the flat, decorated with an 18th-century pergola; the lower terraces are Carthusian vineyards. The route has a main avenue, the monks' walk, with small lawns, trees and botanical essences, from which paths and terraces, reinforced by supports, full of pergolas can be reached. On the retaining wall flanking the long main avenue, the fourteen stations of the Way of the Cross are indicated. The hanging gardens of San Martino - an asset of historic and artistic interest since 2010 - are laid out in the full logic of the baroque garden to enhance the incomparable and spectacular views of the sea and the city. The panoramic walk can also be accessed from the terrace of the Carriage Room of the Museum, which has been housed in the Charterhouse since 1866.
