Lungomare Caracciolo

A heated debate, from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, accompanied the works for the development of the area along the sea. In particular, the discussions concerned the construction of the flooding of the sea, which would make it possible to 'gain' the land necessary for the new road axis and the planned housing and hotel district. Work began in 1872 and continued in stages until 1910, when the famous hotels by the sea were built, and was only completed in 1930 with the completion of the last section of Mergellina and the placement of the Sebeto fountain (1635) in Largo Sermoneta. The result is an endless promenade of incomparable beauty and a succession of breathtaking views of the gulf, with Vesuvius, the Sorrentine peninsula and Capri. Since 2012, a large section of the promenade has been transformed into a pedestrian zone ("liberated promenade"), becoming a meeting place for young people, families and tourists, but also for jogging and cycling (dedicated cycle path).
