Sansossian Museum of Sacred Art

Frattamaggiore (from the Latin fracta, a deforested place, and 'major' in relation to the neighbouring village of the same name) has legendary origins: it was founded in 850 by some inhabitants of Miseno who, fleeing from the raids of Saracen pirates, created the new settlement in an area far from the sea. The story of the mythical foundation of the town is linked to the cult of San Sossio, the patron saint of Miseno, who is recognised as the patron saint of both towns. In 1807, the remains of the martyr, which had been found in the ruins of the Miseno church consecrated to the saint, were transferred to the basilica of San Sossio, the oldest building of worship in the area (10th-13th century). The Museo Sansossiano di Arte Sacra (1996) is housed in the Romanesque crypt of the basilica of San Sossio and exhibits over one hundred works, some of which were recovered after a fire in 1945: fragments of three 18th-century altars (high altar, altar of the Rosary and altar of the Crucifix) made by Neapolitan marble workers; stone fragments (16th-19th century), including the funeral slab of a knight in arms from the 16th century, various riggiole (typical Neapolitan majolica tiles) from the 19th century; tombstones with inscriptions and terracotta funeral slabs (18th-20th century). In 2015, the museum was given new spaces (the 'Cammarelle', rooms between San Sossio and the Town Hall) which house the collection of silverware (17th-20th century); reliquary statues (17th-18th century) and wooden fragments including an antependium with the symbols of San Sossio (19th century); fragments of 16th-century panels, saved from the fire of 1945, and a panel once attributed to Andrea da Salerno. Finally, the second floor is dedicated to 18th and 19th century liturgical vestments made in Campania: chasubles, dalmatics, copes, stoles, bags, chalice veils and humeral veils of refined workmanship.
