Historic Archaeological Museum of Ancient Nola

The museum, housed in the convent complex of Santa Maria la Nova and opened in 2009, tells the story of the Nola area from prehistoric times to the modern age. Of great importance for the Ancient Bronze Age are the findings at Croce del Papa in Nola: a group of huts buried by an eruption (known as the 'Avellino pumice'). Thanks to the traces discovered, it has been possible to reconstruct a village hut on an 11:1 scale in a room of the museum. Also on display are the vases found in the huts (over two hundred, including decorated ones, and some still with their contents) and a female statuette, in rough hand-modelled clay, an important testimony to the cult kept together with miniature vases. The oldest tombs in Nola date back to the 8th-7th centuries B.C. and one of the richest is the female tomb from the Torricelle locality (late 8th century) with a funerary set of silver pendants covered in gold decorated with set amber discs and three blue paste scarabs from Egypt: evidence of the network of trade in which the city was involved. With the Roman conquest (311 B.C.), the city did not lose its wealth and prestige but was confirmed, as the exhibits show, as the most important civitas south of Rome. On the second floor of the museum is the section devoted to the monumental complex of the Roman villa of Starza della Regina in Somma Vesuviana, buried by the eruption of Vesuvius known as "di Pollena" (late 5th-early 6th century A.D.). On display here are the marble statues of the Female figure dressed in the Greek style, a Campanian work of the Imperial age from a Greek model of the late 5th century B.C.
