Torrese Marine Museum

The historic building of the State Railways houses a museum dedicated to the Torre del Greco seafaring tradition, partly linked to the processing and trade of coral. It is a small but growing museum, organised in sections that trace the history of seafaring in Torre del Greco through the objects and with an interactive part. As well as displaying maps made by hand by navigators and coral fishermen - with ancient drawings of the coasts where the red gold was present, considered precious secrets by coral workers -, fundamental equipment for work in the shipyards, nautical instruments and models, the museum reconstructs the vicissitudes of the Torre del Greco shipyards. One area of the museum is reserved for the San Giuseppe 2, which led the first Italian expedition to the South Pole in Antarctica (1969), built in the Palomba shipyards in Torre del Greco. A biographical section is dedicated to the famous Torre del Greco shipwrights: designers- carpenters specialised in working wooden hulls (which originally used the axe) who combined their knowledge of the types and characteristics of timber with their ability to shape and adapt wood. A rich repertoire of period photographs allows visitors to get to know the Turinese ship-owners 'in person', the protagonists of the extraordinary adventure that between the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries contributed to tracing the history of the city's society and economy. An unusual and interesting museum, a place of collective memory of the community.
