At the top of Posillipo hill, whose name (pausilypon, pause for sorrow) already evokes a mild climate and enchanting scenery, the Virgilian Park was designed between the 1920s and 1930s. Set on a plateau on the southern edge of the hill at 150 metres above sea level, close to the archaeological remains of the villa of Vedio Pollione, it covers 22 hectares of maritime pines, eucalyptus, olive trees, strawberry trees, maples, oaks, locust trees, broom and agaves. From the monumental entrance, the main avenue crosses the park as far as the roundabout at the highest point of the area, while a network of secondary paths descends to the lower area, the 'Valley of the Kings', following the irregular course of the tuffaceous ridge among broom and shrubs typical of Mediterranean flora. From the belvederes you can enjoy a 360° view of the gulf, from Vesuvius to Capri, the Phlegraean islands and the Sorrentine peninsula, in a sensorial experience immersed in nature. Renovated on several occasions, the park is equipped with a sports field and athletics tracks, an open-air theatre, children's play areas and refreshment areas. The park is also known as the 'Park of Beauty' and the 'Park of Remembrance', in memory of the fallen soldiers of the First World War. In 2019, the Park reached ninth place in the FAI census of 'places of the heart' in Italy.
