Bordering the Campi Flegrei, a natural oasis since 1987, it is a green lung of about 247 hectares that developed in one of the ancient Phlegraean craters, to which it owes its circular shape.A thermal bath already frequented by the Romans and known until the 12th century, the area has been a royal hunting reserve since the 15th century, the entrance tower dates back to the 15th century, and at the centre of the oasis is the hunting lodge, used by Aragonese sovereigns, Spanish viceroys and Bourbon kings. The original microclimatic conditions and the conformation of the site cause the phenomenon known as vegetation inversion: in the lower part of the crater are essences typical of the higher and colder zones, with downy oak, oak and English oak, while going uphill one finds black hornbeam, chestnut, hazelnut, black poplar, elm and Neapolitan maple, holm oak, strawberry tree, cistus and tree heather, the undergrowth rich in ferns, butcher's broom and ivy. A lake with water lilies and two small ponds are surrounded by reeds. Moles, small rodents, foxes, water snakes, frogs, robins, tits, red woodpeckers, blackbirds, jays, buzzards, kestrels, peregrine falcons, moorhens, coots, owls, tawny owls... are just some of the inhabitants of this true natural paradise.
