Camaldoli City Park

On the Camaldoli hill, at the highest point of the city, at the gateway to the Camaldolese hermitage. Inaugurated in 1997, the park covers 137 hectares. The surface is mainly a continuous wood of coppice chestnut trees crossed by a dense network of footpaths in tufa stone, which often follow the furrows of the waterways, alternating with steep areas: panoramic paths and belvederes ranging from the Gulf of Naples to Pozzuoli. The steepest slopes of the park, one of the areas where the peregrine falcon nests, are reminiscent of the volcanic origin of the Camaldoli (which is part of the Phlegraean area) and the top of the hill, where the wood is, corresponds to part of the outer slope of the caldera. With the chestnut tree as the main protagonist, in the park there are holm oaks, downy oaks, black locusts and hazels, hornbeams, maples and an undergrowth rich in butcher's broom, elder, broom and other shrubs of the Mediterranean maquis, as well as buttercups, anemone, periwinkle, violets and cyclamen, which in spring cover the park in dazzling, colourful bloom. The forest is equipped with rest areas, children's play areas and a pan amphitheatre.
