Street

Piazza dei Martiri

Between the waterfront, busy streets, historic buildings and designer shopping, it is the city's elegant living room. The large, luminous triangular-shaped square is enclosed by three monumental buildings: palazzo Partanna, renovated in 1824 at the request of Ferdinand I of Bourbon to be given to Lucia Migliaccio, widow of the Prince of Partanna; palazzo Calabritto, with its double façade and two entrances, the main one facing the sea dating from the 18th century; palazzo Nunziante, which closes the space at the corner of the street (via Morelli) opened in 1853. The grey granite Martyrs' Column (1866-1868) in the centre is the last act in the transformation of the square after Unification; dedicated to the Neapolitans who died for freedom, the spectacular lions around the base symbolise the anti-Bourbon revolutions of 1799, 1820, 1848 and 1860.
