Posillipo

Favoured by the ancient Romans, it was only between the 16th and 17th centuries that Posillipo, the hill "where troubles cease", became part of the city's fabric, with the construction of the first aristocratic residences. The preference continued into the 18th century, and in the 19th century villas and "casini di delizia" were built along the road, which was constructed in 1823; from the beginning of the 20th century, the coast was populated by romantic villas surrounded by greenery. And superb panoramic views of the coastline are constantly offered on canvases, photographs and souvenir postcards to travellers visiting the town.Among the most famous residences in Posillipo is Palazzo Donn'Anna (1642), named after Anna Carafa, wife of the Spanish viceroy at the time, and designed by the architect Cosimo Fanzago. Built in tuff, on a tufa bank in the sea, it is a perfect fusion of environment and architecture. The upper courtyard was added after the road was opened, but the palace, despite modifications and renovations, retains its characteristic 'unfinished' appearance. On the beach next to Palazzo Donn'Anna, the "Bagni Elena", a bathing establishment opened in 1840, is the set for some filming of the second series of L'amica geniale, based on the novels by Elena Ferrante.
