San Gennaro 2015

In Piazza Crocelle ai Mannesi, at the entrance to Forcella, in the heart of the old town, on a wall flanking the church of San Giorgio Maggiore, on 19 September 2015, the day on which Naples celebrates its patron saint, a mural featuring the effigy of San Gennaro was unveiled to the city. Created just a few steps away from the places traditionally associated with the cult of the saint - the Cathedral of Naples with the Real Cappella del Tesoro di San Gennaro and the Museo del Tesoro di San Gennaro, promoters of the initiative together with the City of Naples and INWARD-Osservatorio sulla creatività urbana - Jorit's mural restores the ancient relationship between art, devotion and community, drawing inspiration from living models. The contemporary face of San Gennaro is in fact the portrait of a young worker whom the artist chose as a model so that he could restore the saint's most human and popular aspect. "I sanctify the people like Caravaggio. Perhaps it sounds blasphemous, but I choose ordinary people to give the faces of Saints and Madonnas, people I know and who have struck me. The San Gennaro portrayed on the Forcella wall is a friend of mine, a 35-year-old Neapolitan worker," says the artist.
