Villa or palace of historical or artistic interest
Villa Fiorentino
From the middle of the nineteenth century, small workshops specialising in the production and trade of embroidery were set up in Sorrento, which soon became active companies on the national and international markets, renowned for the refinement of their fabrics embroidered with the ancient Sorrento stitch or with the famous reticello Sorrento ancient processes that have now been recovered. The A.E. Fiorentino Company was founded in 1863 and became particularly famous for its embroidered handkerchiefs, achieving success in Europe and the United States of America. In the 1930s Antonino Fiorentino and Lucia Cuomo built (1935-36) their own house on an area that reached the ancient city walls, about 10,000 square metres, in the historical centre of Sorrento. A splendid villa, 'American style', inspired by American architectural magazines and furnished with luxury and antique furniture. The residence was conceived with the dual function of home and exhibition space for the most prestigious clients (the rooms on the ground floor are reserved for displaying the company's work). A large garden with camellias and roses precedes the façade while behind the main building is the part of the estate cultivated with citrus trees, with a farmhouse inserted in the ancient walls. Bequeathed by the Fiorentino couple to the Sorrento Town Council, it is now the headquarters of the Sorrento Foundation and the setting for exhibitions, concerts and events, the fulcrum of activities for the knowledge and promotion of Sorrento's cultural and artistic heritage.
