Villa di Villazzano
The Roman villa, attributed to the Augustan period, occupies almost the entire area of the Capo Massa promontory. A splendid and luxurious villa, the home of a wealthy landowner, it consists of a domus, situated higher up, a large garden halfway up the hillside, enclosed by porticoes, planted with vines and connected by a pathway through the greenery to a group of houses by the sea, nymphaea and artificial caves. Some artefacts, such as the capitals and marble reliefs that decorated the walls of one of the villa's halls, are on display in the Georges Vallet Territorial Archaeological Museum of the Sorrentine Peninsula, an important testimony to the owner's refined taste. The villa was linked to wine production and in the Villazzano area there was probably a craft area dedicated to the manufacture of amphorae for surrentinum wine.
